Oxford and Cambridge offers for Ernie!

We have included articles previously about our Founder and Managing Director’s youngest, formerly home-educated son, Ernie applying for Graduate Entry Medicine for 2026 entry. We are really pleased to provide a brilliant update ….

Home educated from Year 5 right through his A Levels, I am delighted to say he has secured offers from both Oxford (Worcester College) and Cambridge (Hughes Hall) – you may apply to both for Graduate Entry Medicine. Competition is insanely high so to receive offers from both in the same year, where each has a slightly different selection focus, is exceptionally rare – probably less than 5%. This is a wonderful achievement and a result not only of sheer hard work but also of detailed planning for several years in advance.

Here’s a brief breakdown of how he achieved his goal which may be of use to any home educating tutor or parent considering Medicine for their students. Ernie failed his 11 plus (it was kept a secret from him knowing the damage it could do to his confidence) but then discovered what worked for his own style of learning and started his GCSES in Y8, completing them in Y10. He began his A Levels in his favourite subjects in what would have been Y9 and completed them in Y12, accepting an offer to read Natural Sciences at Pembroke College, Cambridge aged just 16. No allowances for being self-educated – he had to secure three A* and an A in his four A Levels and he excelled himself with four A* grades. His subjects – Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths plus covering the content of Further Maths and English Literature – because he had started the A Level journey so early, he had time to indulge his love of reading. All perfect for an application for Medicine but he was too young at 16 so he chose Natural Sciences and could never quite decide between Chemistry and Physics – so this was the perfect course for him with its broad scope! Now in his fourth year, Ernie strategically chose a Masters project in using AI to develop and improve MRI scanners at Addenbrookes Hospital, making the process less invasive for epileptic patients. From age 16 work experience has played a large part too – helping out twice weekly at an Oxfam Bookshop and more recently, and most importantly, volunteering on the teenage palliative care ward at his local hospital. I am delighted to say that his home education journey has been a large part of his interview experience and of huge interest to all who have met him. Throughout his A Level study Ernie served as a guinea pig to Mark My Papers, testing learning notes and in-house written GCSE and A Level exam papers, and advising with his rather idiosyncratic learning style to adapt teaching for home educating children. Well done Ernie – a long journey but planned meticulously from clattering through the first fence (11 Plus) to achieving a dream he has always wanted with huge success along the way. For our Founder and Managing Director, Emma White, that will hopefully be her last nerve-wracking encounter with UCAS! Somehow the spirit of guiding our home educated children, as a parent, never seems to die…
